SPEAKER-ELECT KAREN BASS TO ADDRESS
THE EBELL WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP LUNCHEON
(Los Angeles, CA - March 7, 2008) - On the heels of her historic election
as first female Speaker of the California State Assembly, Assemblywoman
Karen Bass (D., 47th Dist.) will serve as guest speaker for the historic
The Ebell of Los Angeles, when it presents its "Women Who are
Shaping the World," luncheon beginning at noon, Monday, March
17, 2008 in the Wilshire Ebell, 743 S. Lucerne Blvd.
Elected late February as 67th speaker of the Assembly, considered
the second most powerful job in state government behind the governor,
Ms. Bass has been as assembly member since 2004 and also serves as
its majority leader.
Known for writing legislation on child welfare and other social issues,
Ms. Bass will become the first African American woman leading a state
legislative chamber in the country.
"Women need to understand that we are powerful in the world,"
Ebell Board President Kay Lachter said. "Women need to see other
women in leadership roles so that they can learn from them,"
she offered. "It is important for women to see themselves empowered."
Complimenting Ms. Bass's work in the Assembly, President Lachter added,
"The important work she has done helps us further define our
role. As an organization we should look outward into the community
as our foremothers did," she said. "We are absolutely thrilled
that Ms. Bass is able to join us," she added.
One of the oldest women's organizations in the United States, The
Ebell of Los Angeles was founded in 1894 as an educational and philanthropic
organization with a mission to participate in and encourage the educational,
cultural and social growth of the diverse Los Angeles community.
Comprised of several socially-oriented departments including History,
Art Appreciation, Travel and Women's Health and others, The Ebell
added its Women in Leadership department two years ago, which is coordinating
the "Women Who Are Shaping the World" luncheon in honor
of Women's History Month under the chairmanship of Areva Martin, Esq.,
Martin & Martin, LLP.
"One of the primary goals of the Women in Leadership department
is to assist The Ebell in remaining relevant by attracting more business
and professional women to the organization and its events," Attorney
Martin explained. "We've brought in other top women leaders throughout
the City, so it is only fitting that one of Ms. Bass's first public
appearances as the historic speaker-elect, be at one of the oldest
women's clubs in the history of this country, during Women's History
Month," she said.
Excited about her new role and about speaking before the historic
Ebell of Los Angeles, Majority Leader Bass commented, "I think
it's wonderful that The Ebell of Los Angeles has developed a Women
in Leadership series. It's imperative that we have organizations like
this to help empower women to make change happen. It's always a pleasure
to come together with dynamic women and highlight accomplishments,
which hopefully will inspire others. I look forward to participating
in this empowering event."
While women are sponsoring this event, men also are welcome. For additional
information and to reserve your ticket for the noon, Monday, March
17th luncheon contact The Ebell of Los Angeles, 323.931.1277.
