FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OneBrownGirl.com Founder Announces The Talking White Project
CBS 5's "Bay
Sunday" to Air Interview July 12, 2009
Oakland,
CA (BlackNews.com) - When Tracey Friley, creator and principal of
OneBrownGirl.com® (OBG), won first prize at the Black Enterprise
Elevator Pitch Competition in 2008, she had no idea that less than
two years later she would be penning a book meant to help kids cope
with being bullied by racial slurs. Inspired by Friley's business
coach and his challenge for her to tap into her personal pain, Friley
is using her personal experiences growing up as a young Brown Girl
in Los Angeles to fuel her ongoing mission to empower Brown Girls
that need a little love and understanding with her book Talking White:
14 Ways to Cope with Thoughtless Remarks. As a result of the resurrection
of this controversial and age-old topic, Friley will appear as a guest
on CBS 5's "Bay Sunday," the San Francisco Bay Area's weekly
source for public affairs coverage, hosted by journalist Sue Kwon
and produced by Akilah Bolden-Monifa on July 12, 2009. Friley's interview
will appear on the Bay Sunday Web site as early as July 10, 2009.
Although
Talking White is not a memoir, the preface to Friley's book -- My
Life as an Oreo -- provides readers with a glimpse into a traumatic
event that is the source of Friley's pain and the reason for the creation
of the OneBrownGirl.com® brand as well as the book. "Exposing
myself in this way has been pretty cathartic," says Friley. "I'm
just trying to make sure people understand that words do hurt and
can sometimes have long term effects; particularly when it comes to
kids. It is time to create a solution-oriented dialogue." For
a limited time, Friley is offering a free digital download of My Life
as an Oreo on the OneBrownGirl.com® Web site.
Friley
wants it to be clear that The Talking White Project (as she calls
it) is not merely about the book. In fact, Friley is currently facilitating
a private online focus group made up of a multicultural group of OBG
subscribers with similar experiences which will serve as inspiration
and research for her current book-in-progress and future books to
come. Friley explains, "I want the focus group to be private
so that participants feel secure as they uncover their vulnerabilities.
This can be pretty emotional stuff." The Talking White Project
includes a book series, ongoing online focus groups, a free teleseminar
series with celebrity guests, and a series of short online videos
with everyday people discussing both sides of this age-old issue.
Friley
will complete Talking White: 14 Ways to Cope with Thoughtless Remarks
in the mid to late Fall of 2009.
