Exciting News: Tarell Alvin McCraney Named Artistic Director of Geffen Playhouse

The Geffen Playhouse Board of Directors has just dropped a bombshell announcement: Academy Award-winning (for “Moonlight”) and Peabody Award-winning (for “David Makes Man”) genius, as well as Tony Award nominee (for “Choir Boy”), Tarell Alvin McCraney, is stepping into the role of Artistic Director, effective immediately.

This is a monumental moment for the Geffen Playhouse, and we’re about to dive into all the reasons why.

A Visionary Leader Takes the Helm

In his newfound role, Tarell will wield his artistic prowess to curate a captivating blend of new works and reimagined classics. His mission? To invigorate the theater scene with innovative storytelling, foster community engagement, and elevate the audience experience. But that’s not all—Tarell will also chart the strategic artistic course for the Geffen’s prestigious Gil Cates and Audrey Skirball Kenis Theaters, all while leading our talented artistic and production teams.

Tarell’s journey with the Geffen Playhouse began in 2014 when he introduced us to his highly acclaimed play, “Choir Boy,” during its West Coast premiere at the Geffen’s Gil Cates Theater. Directed by the talented Trip Cullman and starring the incredible Jeremy Pope, the play left a lasting impression on audiences. Fast forward to February 2020, and Tarell’s involvement in the Geffen Playhouse took a more permanent shape with the announcement of his artist residency, in partnership with Cast Iron Entertainment. This cohort of artists includes luminaries such as Sterling K. Brown, Glenn Davis, Brian Tyree Henry, Jon Michael Hill, and André Holland.

A Warm Welcome to Tarell

Join us in giving Tarell Alvin McCraney the warmest of welcomes to the Geffen Playhouse family. We’re absolutely thrilled to have him on board, and you’ll have the opportunity to get to know him better in the coming months as he takes the helm of our beloved institution.
