Romeo, Juliet & Dance Theatre of Harlem
Thu / Sept 11, 2025 – 8:00PM
Music by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and Adolphus Hailstork intertwines with dance as Shakespeare’s tragic romance unfolds.
“Never was there a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.” Nor was there a story that inspired so many retellings across the cultural landscape. Two of their most indelible musical adaptations bookend this concert: Tchaikovsky’s romantically saturated fantasy overture and Prokofiev’s pulsating suite.
Dance Theatre of Harlem joins the Los Angeles Philharmonic, along with conductor Jonathon Heyward who returns to the Bowl, in bringing Shakespeare’s vision to life. In between, the company sets in motion Adolphus Hailstork’s Symphony No. 1, bringing together influences from West Africa, South and Central American, Asia, and Black spirituals into a classical structure.
