Community Service Guide
While Los Angeles may be a sprawling metropolitan area that covers a multitude of miles and various cities, the element that helps to keep the African American community cohesive is its many nonprofit organizations. These not-for-profit organizations, made up of community groups, businesses, and fraternal groups, focus on uplifting the community and providing vital services which contribute to its health and economic stability.
Nonprofits bring something else to the community — an opportunity to boost your personal and professional skills. Nonprofits can offer a variety of volunteering opportunities for college students, improving their employability, career prospects and soft skills that foster a great work environment. We encourage college students to use this list to find an organization to partner with, using it as an opportunity to get involved in the community, develop your skills, and further your interests.
Nonprofits like, My Friends House, which feeds the homeless every Wednesday in Downtown Los Angeles and Jenesse Center, a domestic violence intervention and prevention organization that has been serving the community since 1980, provide critical services that support Los Angeles residents. Without these organizations, many of our residents wouldn’t survive.
