Charles Burnett brings his award-winning film, “Black Hollywood & COVID”, to the DTLAFF

Honorary Oscar-Winner Charles Burnett brings his award-winning film, “Black Hollywood & COVID”, to the Prestigious Downtown LA Film Festival (DTLAFF)

LOS ANGELES, CA – Sept 7, 2022

Viewers will hear the strong voice of Black Hollywood in director Charles Burnett’s “Black Hollywood & COVID”– an episode from the award-winning docuseries, “After The LockDown: Black In LA”. In his episode, Burnett (Killer of Sheep, To Sleep With Anger, The Glass Shield), brings together a group of Black people from the film and entertainment industries, including high profile celebrities Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tony Award-winning actress, vocalist, and political activist and star of the hit TV show Abbott Elementary; award-winning Debbie Allen, executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy; actor and director Bill Duke, recipient of numerous awards, and others. The group discusses not only how the pandemic impacted them and Hollywood, but Black America as well.

A second episode from “After The LockDown: Black In LA”, entitled “Advocates” and directed by Joy Shannon, will screen with Burnett’s. “Advocates” includes passionate conversations from Dominique DiPrima, Holly Mitchell, Dr. David Carlisle, Nina Harawa, PhD, and Bernard Parks.

The producers of the docuseries recognized that the Black LA community needed a representative voice to tell their stories, showcase to the rest of the world how the virus has disproportionately taken a higher toll on their lives, and give context to why this happened. Both episodes provide heartfelt insight regarding Black survival during the pandemic.
