Meet the Black Doctors! Listening to Black Patients in CA

Sat Oct 28th 10:00am – 12:00pm
Ladera Park Senior Center4750 West 62nd Street, Windsor Hills, CA 90056

Sometimes the best treatment is a doctor who listens.

In CA, if you are a Black birthing person or a black person with a chronic illness, you shouldn’t have to advocate for yourself when you’re at your most ill.

Is it too much to expect doctors to believe the words you force out of your mouth, amidst spikes of pain, after you’ve dragged yourself to the urgent care? Yet so often Black patients, words are ignored.

Recent studies have shown that doctors prescribe less pain medication for Black patients versus white patients with the same condition. Studies have shown doctors often hold outdated and racist beliefs about Black patients. This can lead to life-threatening experiences when doctors are more likely to believe a racist construct than their Black patients. Black birthing persons should survive pregnancy/delivery. And black people in general must be physically well and healthy to end racism.

Join us for a year-long series about Listening to Black Patients.
