What makes somewhere feel like home?
A new exhibition opening at the Compton Art & History Museum this month explores that question through art, photography, memory and the experiences of communities across South Los Angeles.
At Home: Between Memory & Place opens Saturday, October 17, with a free community celebration presented by Color Compton.
The exhibition examines the deeply personal meanings attached to home—not simply the physical place where we live, but the people, memories, culture and experiences that give a place meaning. Eventbrite
Compton and South LA Artists Take Center Stage
The exhibition features work by Madelyn Reasin-Bodden, Floyd Strickland, Abby Aceves and Terrick Gutierrez, alongside photography from South LA artists. Eventbrite
Through their work, visitors are invited to consider what home looks and feels like—and how those ideas are shaped by family, community, identity and memory.
It’s an especially fitting conversation to have in Compton, a community with a rich cultural history and generations of residents whose stories have helped shape greater Los Angeles.
Opening Day Is a Community Cookout
This isn’t your typical quiet gallery opening.
The museum is kicking off the exhibition with an At Home Family Cookout on Saturday, October 17, from 4–7 PM.
Visitors can see the exhibition, meet and connect with community members and enjoy an afternoon centered around art, music, food and community. BBQ food and drinks will be available for purchase. Eventbrite
And admission to the opening is free. Eventbrite

BlackNLA Take
One of the things we want to do more of at BlackNLA is spotlight cultural experiences happening inside our own communities, and this is exactly that kind of event.
At Home isn’t only an art exhibition. It’s an opportunity to see Compton and South LA stories represented on gallery walls, support local artists and spend an afternoon connecting with community.
And with Taste of Soul happening earlier that same day on Crenshaw, October 17 could make a pretty good Black LA culture day: Taste of Soul during the day, then head to Compton for the At Home opening at 4 PM.
