Los Angeles school employees could have new opportunities to find affordable housing as the district advances two proposed developments.
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is taking another step toward addressing Southern California’s housing affordability challenges. On October 6, the Board of Education approved the selection of developers for two potential workforce housing projects that could create nearly 600 apartments for district employees.
The proposed developments would be located at district-owned properties in West Hollywood and the western San Fernando Valley.
Together, the projects could provide approximately 598 apartments, with housing opportunities for employees earning between 30% and 120% of the area’s median income.
Who Could Benefit?
The proposed housing wouldn’t be limited to teachers. Depending on household income and size, eligible employees could include school nurses, custodians, instructional aides, food service workers, and administrative staff.
The apartments would be offered first to LAUSD employees, consistent with applicable state law.
For many school employees, finding housing near their workplace can be a significant financial challenge. The proposed developments aim to help workers live closer to the communities they serve.
What’s Next?
The district has approved developer selections, but construction has not yet been authorized.
The projects must still go through additional planning, community engagement, negotiations, and final Board approval.
According to LAUSD, the developments would be financed, operated, and maintained by the selected affordable housing developers without district funding.
While applications are not yet available, school employees interested in future housing opportunities can follow LAUSD announcements for updates.
