Dominique Morisseau’s Confederates Makes Its Los Angeles Premiere at The Fountain Theatre

Two Black women. Two eras. More than 150 years apart. And some of the same battles over race, gender and power.

Tony Award-nominated playwright and MacArthur Fellow Dominique Morisseau’s Confederates is coming to Los Angeles this fall, with performances running October 30 through December 13, 2026, at The Fountain Theatre. Preview performances take place October 28 and 29. The Fountain Theatre

The provocative comedy-drama moves between the lives of two Black women separated by more than a century.

Sara is an enslaved woman during the Civil War who becomes a spy for the Union. Sandra is a tenured political science professor at a prestigious university in present-day America.

Despite living in dramatically different periods, both women find themselves navigating questions of race, gender, trust, institutional power and betrayal. Morisseau moves between their stories to examine how the legacy of America’s past continues to show up in modern institutions. The Fountain Theatre

Black Women at the Center of the Story

Directed by Fountain Theatre Artistic Director Raymond O. Caldwell, the Los Angeles production stars Nedra Ryan Taylor as Sara and Sarah Scott Davis as Sandra. The cast also includes Sufe Bradshaw, Mara Klein and Daks McClettie II. The Fountain Theatre

Morisseau is one of the country’s acclaimed contemporary Black playwrights. Her work includes Skeleton Crew, Paradise Blue, Detroit ’67 and Pipeline. She also wrote the book for the Broadway musical Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations, which earned her a Tony Award nomination. The Fountain Theatre

For Confederates, she turns her attention to Black womanhood and the connection between America’s history and the institutions Black Americans navigate today.

BlackNLA Take

Confederates looks like one of the more interesting Black theater productions coming to Los Angeles this fall—not simply because Black women are at the center of the story, but because the production creates opportunities for the Black community to experience and discuss the work together.

The November 13 Black affinity performance is especially worth putting on the calendar.
