Black Film Space Launches Screenwriting Accountability Group to Help Writers Finish Their Scripts

The nine-week virtual program begins November 2, offering screenwriters structured writing sessions, community support, and accountability. Registration closes October 27.

For aspiring and experienced screenwriters, coming up with a great story is often the easy part. Finding the time, discipline, and motivation to finish a screenplay can be the real challenge.

That’s where Black Film Space comes in.

The organization is bringing back its Screenwriting Accountability Group for Fall and Winter 2026, a nine-week virtual program designed to help writers establish consistent writing habits, make progress on their screenplays, and connect with a community of fellow creatives.

Running November 2, 2026, through January 22, 2027, the program provides dedicated writing time without the distractions of traditional workshops or critique sessions.

For Los Angeles screenwriters working to break into the entertainment industry—or established writers struggling to complete their next project—the program offers a structured way to stay focused.

A Different Approach to Screenwriting

Unlike traditional screenwriting classes, Black Film Space’s Accountability Group isn’t designed to teach participants how to write a screenplay.

Instead, the program focuses on helping writers actually get the writing done.

Participants meet virtually on Zoom for two-hour sessions, Monday through Friday. During each session, writers establish a goal, work independently on their scripts, and share their progress afterward.

Cameras remain on and microphones stay muted during writing periods, creating a focused environment where participants can work alongside other writers without interruption.

The concept is simple: Show up, write consistently, and make progress toward completing your screenplay.

Each session also includes approximately 10 minutes afterward for writers to connect and discuss their accomplishments.

Flexible Writing Sessions for Busy Creatives

One of the biggest improvements to this year’s program is increased scheduling flexibility.

Rather than being assigned to one group, participants can attend any available session—and as many sessions as they like.

For Los Angeles writers, the three daily session options translate to:

Session Eastern Time Los Angeles Time
Group A 7–9 AM 4–6 AM
Group B 10 AM–12 PM 7–9 AM
Group C 10 PM–12 AM 7–9 PM

Note: These Pacific Time conversions apply during standard time, which begins November 1, 2026.

Writers are expected to attend at least four sessions per week.

The program also includes weekly progress check-ins through the Black Film Space membership portal, where participants can track their attendance, share accomplishments, set goals, and connect with other writers.

More Than Just Writing Time

Although the Accountability Group isn’t a workshop or feedback program, it provides opportunities for participants to build relationships with other screenwriters.

That sense of community can be particularly valuable in an industry where creative work often happens independently.

Participants will have opportunities to connect with fellow writers throughout the cohort while developing the consistency needed to complete their projects.

The program is designed for writers who are actively working toward finishing a screenplay and are comfortable writing silently in a shared virtual environment.

Who Should Consider Joining?

The program may be a good fit for screenwriters who:

  • Have started a screenplay but are struggling to finish it.
  • Want to develop a consistent writing routine.
  • Need accountability to stay focused on their creative goals.
  • Enjoy working independently while being part of a creative community.
  • Can commit to at least four writing sessions per week.

Because the program emphasizes productivity rather than instruction, participants should already have a writing project they want to work on.

Membership and Registration

The Screenwriting Accountability Group is available exclusively to Black Film Space members.

Annual membership costs $75 and includes additional benefits beyond the accountability program.

Members receive access to virtual screenwriting workshops, recorded webinars, networking opportunities, a membership directory, and eligibility to apply for select Black Film Space grants and programs.

The organization has also introduced weekly progress tracking and additional opportunities for members to connect during the cohort.

BlackNLA Take

Los Angeles is home to countless talented writers, filmmakers, and storytellers. But having a great idea and completing a screenplay are two very different things.

What makes this program particularly appealing is its focus on something many creative professionals struggle with: consistency.

Rather than another class about how to write, Black Film Space is creating an environment where writers can dedicate time to doing the work.

For Black screenwriters looking to build momentum, finish a project, and connect with other creatives, this could be a worthwhile opportunity.

Sometimes the most valuable thing a writer needs isn’t another lesson—it’s the time, structure, and accountability to finish the story.
