New LA Play Explores Political Power, Neighborhood Displacement and the Fight for Community thru Nov. 15th

The Robey Theatre Company’s world premiere of What Had Happened Was… examines what happens when a public official must choose between political pressure and protecting the community he represents.

A new Los Angeles theater production is taking on issues that resonate throughout Southern California: neighborhood displacement, political influence and the difficult decisions facing community leaders.

What Had Happened Was…, written by Reginald Edmund, makes its world premiere this month at the Los Angeles Theatre Center in Downtown LA.

Presented by The Robey Theatre Company in association with the Los Angeles Theatre Center, the production is directed by Ben Guillory.

Previews begin October 22 and 23, with opening night scheduled for Saturday, October 24. Performances continue through November 15.

When Progress Threatens a Neighborhood

The story centers on Marcellus Turner, a passionate Los Angeles city councilman and community advocate who enters public office determined to make a difference.

Through interviews, memories and personal reflections, the play follows his journey from his early relationship with the woman who becomes his wife to his rise as a political leader.

But when a powerful university expansion threatens to displace longtime residents, Marcellus faces a difficult question: How far is he willing to go to defend the people who placed their trust in him?

The story examines the personal and political consequences of standing up for a community when powerful interests are pushing in another direction.

A Story That Resonates in Los Angeles

Across Los Angeles, conversations about development, housing affordability, gentrification and neighborhood preservation continue to shape public debate.

For historically Black communities, these issues can carry particular significance as residents navigate rising costs and changes to neighborhoods with deep cultural histories.

Although What Had Happened Was… is a fictional story, its themes connect to real questions about who benefits from development and whose voices are heard when neighborhoods change.

Supporting Black Theater in Los Angeles

The Robey Theatre Company has a longstanding commitment to producing work that explores the Black experience and highlights stories that deserve greater attention.

This latest production continues that tradition by bringing contemporary political and community issues to the stage.
