A Compton-born artist is receiving a major hometown spotlight as three Los Angeles cultural institutions present his work in exhibitions opening October 20.
Los Angeles is celebrating one of its own.
Contemporary artist Reggie Burrows Hodges, born in Compton in 1965, will be featured in three simultaneous exhibitions at the Getty Center, California African American Museum (CAAM), and Art + Practice in Leimert Park.
Opening October 20, 2026, the exhibitions represent Hodges’ first solo museum presentations in his hometown, bringing his distinctive paintings to audiences across Los Angeles.
Three Exhibitions, Three Perspectives
The presentations explore different aspects of Hodges’ artistic practice, from childhood memories in Compton to his interpretation of classical European paintings.
At the Getty Center, A Theater of Passions features five paintings inspired by 17th-century Italian works in the museum’s collection. Hodges reimagines the drama, relationships and emotions of historical paintings through his own contemporary artistic approach.
At the California African American Museum, A Theater of Miracles examines how classical paintings have influenced Hodges’ work, highlighting the beauty and complexity of everyday experiences.
Meanwhile, Art + Practice in Leimert Park presents A Theater of Dreams, featuring paintings inspired by Hodges’ childhood in Compton, the cultural legacy of Leimert Park and his travels through Europe.
Together, the exhibitions offer an opportunity to experience how an artist with deep Southern California roots connects personal memory, Black life and centuries of art history.
A Homecoming for a Compton Artist
Hodges’ paintings frequently explore themes of memory, labor, identity and power.
His work often features atmospheric figures and richly layered colors, creating images that invite viewers to reflect on the relationships between people, places and their histories.
For Los Angeles audiences, the three exhibitions represent more than a major artistic achievement. They also highlight the contributions of an artist whose creative perspective was shaped in part by growing up in Compton.
The collaboration between Getty, CAAM and Art + Practice places his work in three very different cultural settings, including two institutions with particularly strong connections to Black Los Angeles.
